Driver Awareness

The Safer Roads Partnership and Hampshire Constabulary have been offering an alternative to prosecution for some driving offences since October 2007. Initially, one course was available to low end speeders in 30 mph limits across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. A second course was developed for low end speeders on roads with a 40mph or above limit and made available to drivers in January 2009 and both courses were consolidated into one in 2010. A driver diversion course has also been introduced and is available to drivers detected using a hand held mobile phone whilst driving or drivers who are not in a positiont to have proper control of their vehicle or a view of the road ahead.

What is the aim of the Driver Awareness Training speed courses?

The aim is quite simply, to improve the knowledge, attitudes and behaviour of any driver attending a course, thereby reducing the likelihood of that driver being involved in a future speeding incident.

 The course will address:

What caused the individual to exceed the posted speed limit, what their reasons were for doing so and the impact and consequences of their behaviour.

 The trainers will:

 * explore attitudes towards speed

 * explain how to identify the speed limit for any road in England and Wales

 * highlight stopping distances and a simple technique to ensure that drivers leave sufficient gap between their vehicle and the vehicle in front

 * look at the consequences of a collision and show why small increases in speed make significant differences in the event of an emergency situation

 * discuss hazard perception and how road markings provide advance warning of hazards

 * heighten awareness of the dangers and safety issues faced by all road users

The course aims are achieved through the delivery of a 3.25 hours interactive course where candidates are encouraged to participate and share views and experiences.

Over 75,000 drivers have now successfully attended the speed courses and the following are extracts of comments from some of the attendees:

“Thank you for what has proved to be a positive, meaningful and enjoyable experience”

“It made me think about my own driving and how it can be improved”

“I learned a huge amount and will not forget it on the road”

“The whole experience was different from anything I was expecting and the teaching was of a very high standard”

“I’m passing on some of the things I learned to my husband and (adult) sons”

What is the aim of the Driver Diversion course?

The course aim is to raise awareness in drivers to the dangers and consequences of distractions within our vehicles

 Trainers will:

  •  explain the laws regarding being distracted whilst driving
  • discuss the various types of distraction faced by drivers
  • state the risks and consequences of failing to concentrate whilst driving
  • identify the law specific to the use of mobile phones whilst driving

The course aims are achieved through the delivery of a 2.5 hours interactive course where candidates are encouraged to participate and share views and experiences.
