Bramshaw man guilty of Perverting the Course of Justice.
Paul Roger Jeffery of Ashdown Cottage, Bramshaw admitted to 10 counts of Perverting the Course of Justice and 2 of Forgery at Southampton Crown Court on 14th December 2006 in an attempt to avoid speeding penalties. Yesterday (1st February 2007) he was sentenced to 10 months imprisonment and disqualified from driving for 6 months. Jeffery filled in and signed the paperwork in the names of 4 students who had previously rented accommodation from him. As a result of the deception the students had had points put on their licences in their absence.
The court heard that cars owned by Jeffery had activated speed cameras 10 times in Hampshire, Wiltshire, Bedfordshire and Dorset between June 2003 and February 2006. On each occasion the paperwork that was sent to the registered keeper of the vehicle was returned giving various names for the drivers. On investigation it emerged that none of the 4 named drivers had in fact been driving the vehicles but that they had all been former tenants of Jeffery. When one of them informed the DVLA of her change of address the points came to light and an investigation was initiated.
Julian Hewitt, spokesperson for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Safety Camera Partnership, said: “Four totally innocent young people were the victims in this case. They have had to deal with the stress and inconvenience that resulted from Mr Jeffery’s selfish action.
Perverting the course of justice is a serious offence which is reflected in the sentence. This case dramatically illustrates the inadvisability of attempting to avoid speeding penalties by telling lies about the driver. Our investigation officers are aware of all the tricks in the book and will relentlessly pursue offenders.”
