Speed Enforcement on Northam Bridge, Peartree Avenue & West Quay Road.
Road users on Northam Bridge, Peartree Avenue and West Quay Rd in Southampton will be protected by fixed speed cameras from the week beginning Monday 28th November 2005.

On Northam Bridge – speed limit 30 mph - in the three years baseline period there were 12 collisions that have caused personal injury of which 4 were collisions that caused death or serious injury. These collisions resulted in a total of 14 casualties. On Peartree Avenue – speed limit 30 mph - there were 14 collisions that caused personal injury of which 6 caused death or serious injury. These collisions resulted in a total of 20 casualties. On West Quay Road – speed limit 30 mph - there were 23 collisions that caused personal injuries of which 6 caused death or serious injury.

Julian Hewitt, spokesperson for the Safety Camera Partnership said: “Southampton City Council and the police work closely together and with their other partners to identify roads where conspicuous speed enforcement will result in casualty reduction. By slowing down, motorists will have more time to avoid a collision if they find themselves in a situation that might result in a collision. In any collision that does happen the slower the vehicles are travelling the less serious the casualties will be. The roads are very clearly signed to show that cameras are operating so there is no reason why anyone should be caught speeding.”

Last year (2003/4) there was a reduction of 62% in the number of people killed or seriously injured and 35% in the number of collisions in which people sustained an injury on camera routes in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
