New speed camera locations in Southampton

Three new speed cameras locations will make the roads safer for residents and visitors to Southampton shortly. Provisional dates for the installation of the fixed cameras on Peartree Avenue, West Quay Road and Northam Bridge have been agreed.

Julian Hewitt of the Safety Camera Partnership said: “Southampton City Council, Hampshire Constabulary and the Department for Transport work closely together to ensure that all our cameras are in positions that give us the maximum potential to reduce casualties. The clear signs alerting motorists that the road is protected by cameras should flag up to them that there have been a high number of casualties on the road. If they drive at an appropriate speed, well within the limit, the number of casualties should decline.”

Work is expected to begin next week. Road users will notice the camera signs and the housings of the fixed cameras being installed over the next few weeks. The cameras will not be commissioned and put into use until all the relevant checks have been made.

Councillor Baston, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport at Southampton City Council said: "I am pleased with the casualty savings already effected by safety cameras over the past three years and endorse the work of the Partnership. The introduction of these new camera sites will enhance the improvements that we have already seen in road safety in the City of Southampton."

The partnership will be releasing updated casualty figures for all cameras for 2004-5 in the near future. In 2003-4 there was an average 21 percent reduction in Personal Injury Accidents on Southampton camera routes - from an annual average of 96 before enforcement started to an annual average of 76 post enforcement. The number of fatal or serious accidents also dropped by some 43 percent – from an annual average of 14 pre-enforcement to an annual average post-enforcement of 8.
