Cameras Keep M27 road works safe.
Vulnerable road workers and motorists will be protected by speed enforcement in the road works between junctions 5 and 9 on the M27.
A spokesperson for the Safety Camera Partnership which is responding to a Highways Authority request to carry out the enforcement in the road works said: “There is a temporary 50 mph speed limit to protect workers who are in close proximity to the traffic. The work mainly focuses on the central reservation where crash barriers have been removed and equipment brought in which causes hazards for the motorists which the temporary limit seeks to minimise.”
The essential road works are expected to go on for several weeks.
The spokesperson went on to say: “ There have been speed activated signs in the road works that flash up the speed limits to road users who are exceeding them but drivers have been ignoring these and driving well over the limit. There have already been several accidents in the road works and drivers have even tried to overtake marked police vehicles that were going at the limit. We are keen to alert people to both the new temporary limit and the fact that they are likely to get caught if they ignore it. The temporary 50 mph speed limit is clearly signed and it is important for everyone’s safety that motorists keep well within this limit.”
